Safety is our main concern at MDOT.
When picking up trash on our roads and highways here are some tips to help you stay safe:
DO’s
- Do work only when traffic control signs are in place.
- Do wear ANSI approved safety vests at all times!
- Do wear light colored clothing, long sleeves, a hat, heavy gloves, sunscreen protective work shoes or boots.
- Do face oncoming traffic and look up often to monitor approaching vehicles.
- Do park all vehicles off roadways and shoulders at least 5 ft. away from shoulder.
- Do learn to recognize materials which could be meth waste and stay away from them.
- Do have a first aid kit available at all times.
- Do be cautious at all times!
DON’T’s
- Don’t work on roadways, shoulders or bridges.
- Don’t unload work crews on shoulders or highways.
- Don’t participate in activities that might distract drivers.
- Don’t wear any audio device or talk on cell phones when picking up.
- Don’t pick-up, remove or touch hazardous substances like syringes or hypodermic needles.
- Don’t attempt to remove known or suspected toxic/hazardous substances or materials.
- Don’t remove dead animals.
- Don’t overfill or stuff trash bags. Remember to tie bag tops.
